McKENZIE, Stewart Allen (1895-1970)
Stewart Allan McKenzie was born at Lubeck near Horsham, on 20 October 1895, the son of Robert McKenzie and Elizabeth nee Quinlivan.
He was educated at Murtoa State School and Geelong College as day student where he entered in February 1911 and left in December 1915. He was a member of the College 1st Cricket XI in 1914 and 1915, the 1st Football Team 1913-1915 and a School Prefect in 1915.
During World War I, he enlisted (No 5712) on 1 March 1916 in the AIF with the 14th Battalion, 18th Reinforcements. He subsequently embarked on 4 May 1916 on HMAT A17 Port Lincoln for Egypt, and proceeding then on 6 August for France. He suffered mumps, and required confinement at 39 CCS on 30 December 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in March 1917.
Stewart McKenzie was wounded at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, suffering gunshot wounds to the buttock and right leg, evacuated to Australia on HMT Suevic, embarking on 27 September 1917. He was discharged as medically unfit due to war service. He was a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps in World War II.
He died on 7 July 1970.
