MURPHY, Paul William (1961-2016)
Paul William Murphy was born on 28 March 1961 in Oxfordshire, UK and attended school at Southport, UK before his enrolment as a day student at Geelong College from 8 February 1973 to December 1977 and entering Coles House at Senior School. His address at enrolment was 3 Claremont Avenue, Newtown. His father, John Murphy was a languages teacher at Geelong College from 1973 to 1977.
At College, Paul became a member of the 1st Hockey Team of 1977, the first College team to play in 'A' Division of the Geelong Hockey Association. Also a member of the College Swimming Team, he gained School Colours in both Hockey and Swimming. In 1976, he was awarded the Robert Gillespie (Junior) Prize. A keen fencer he became the U16A and Under 20B Fencing Champion.
Paul furthered his education at Melbourne University as a member of International House becoming President of the International House Student Association in 1981-82. He later entered the Finance Industry becoming a merchant banker and worked variously in Sydney from 1985, Singapore from 1991, New York from 1993, Singapore from 1996, and Tokyo from 1998 before returning to Singapore.
In later life Paul became a devotee of Polo, joining the Singapore Polo Club. He served as committee member and treasurer earning the nickname 'Murf' and a reputation for enthusiasm, dedication and hard work for the Club.
Paul died, aged 55 years, on 17 May 2016.
His brother, Chris, and sister, Gill, were also educated at Geelong College.
