There is considerable uncertainty regarding the identity of C W Nowatna. He is listed as 'Nowatna, C W' on the Geelong College World War I Memorial Tablet however there is no enrolment record listed for him, nor is he visible in any of the other publications of the College. There are two identified candidates: one is 'Carl Wilhem Nowotna (1881-1977)' of the Wimmera and the second is 'William Charles Nowotna' from western Victoria. No World War I service records can be located for 'Carl Wilhelm Nowotna' but the National Archives does hold war service records for a 'William Charles Nowotna'.
Carl Wilhelm Nowotna (1881-1977)
Carl Wilhelm Nowatna (1881-1977), born at Murtoa, was the son of Christian Novotna (1845-1910) and Berth Emilie Towk (1862-1954), farmers at Kewell near Minyip, Victoria. Carl married Agnes Ada Hannig (1886-1983) at the residence of her father, Paul Hannig in 1907. He was a farmer at Rainbow in the Wimmera when he reported the theft of his overcoat on 7 September 1917. No World War I service details have been found for him. He died at Geelong on either 30 March 1977 or 1 April 1977, age 96, and was interred at the Geelong Western Cemetery.
William Charles Nowotna (1873-
'William Charles Nowotna was born at Dunkeld. His parents may have been Martin Nowotna (1828-1888) and Elizabeth Getz (1827-1900)
In 1897, he married Mary Josephine Murphy (1874-1948), daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Murphy, of Parkville, and they resided at Cardigan Street, Albert Park. During World War I, he enlisted (No. 567) aged 42, on 1 March 1915, as a Private in 13th Australian Light Horse Regiment, and embarked on 28 May 1915 on HMAT A34 Persic with Henry Fenton Pillow, they having consecutive regimental numbers. Promoted Lance Corporal in C Squadron on 8 August 1915, and Corporal on 1 February 1916, he transferred to 5th Division Cavalry in Tel-el-Kebir on 13 March, and embarked for France on 7 July. He took leave in Paris late in September 1917 and to London late in October 1918. He returned to Australia, embarking on 27 April 1919.
William and Mary Nowotna had one son, Arthur John Nowotna, who was born in 1898 at Murtoa. He also enlisted in the AIF on 28 March 1916, and embarked for England on HMAT A67 Orsova on 1 August 1916, where he suffered a gun-shot wound on 26 September 1917 to the right leg, while serving with 59 Battalion. After being evacuated to England he recuperated, returning to France on 23 April 1918, where he was wounded for a second time on 20 September 1918, and evacuated again on Armistice Day for England, suffering synovitis in his right knee. He returned to Australia on HMT Prinz Ludwig on 9 July 1919.'
