OSBORNE, Jack Boughton (1898-1969)


Jack Boughton Osborne was born in Warrnambool on 28 December 1898, the son of Henry William Osborne and Elizabeth Emma nee Cassady. He became a boarder at geelong College in February 1912 departing in December 1915. He had previously attended Trinity Grammar School, Kew. His address when he enrolled was 52 Lisson Grove, Hawthorn, Victoria.

He was employed as a bank clerk when he enlisted (No 2755) in the AIF on 17 July 1916, and then embarked with the 58 Battalion, 6th Reinforcement Group on HMAT A71 Nestor on 2 October 1916 for France, where he served as a Private through the last two years of the Great War. He was wounded in action, suffering the effects of a mustard gas attack on 6 August 1918 with burns to the face due to mustard gas. He was evacuated to Northamptonshire War Hospital on 10 August. During his service overseas he was hospitalised 9 times between July 1916 and September 1918. He embarked on HMT Bakara, returning to Australia on 6 January 1919, where he was discharged medically unfit.

He served with the Volunteer Defence Corps VDC) during World War II.
