PHILP, Peter Evan Michael Lyle (1945-2017)
Peter Philp, was a dedicated volunteer who coached Geelong College rowing from 1992 to 1997. The year prior to his retirement from coaching at the School, the College named one of its boats the ‘Peter Philp’ in honour of his outstanding service to College rowing. In 1993, Peter coached the Boys 1st College VIII to a much needed victory in the Head of the River. Peter died at Cabrini, Prahran on 3 January 2017.
Peter was enrolled as a day student at the Geelong College Kindergarten on 20 September 1949 and is recorded as leaving the Preparatory School in August 1959. In 1959, he won the Under 14 swimming championship and inter-house cross country run as a member of Morrison House and rowed in the 8th VIII. He was a member of the College Swimming Team in 1958 and 1959. In 1959, he commenced as a student at Scotch College, Melbourne where he continued until December 1964. It was at Scotch that he excelled at rowing, participating in their 1963 Head of the River victory and stroking the 1964 Scotch College 1st VIII.
After leaving Scotch he joined Mercantile Rowing Club and rowed in a coxless heavyweight IV in the 1966 World Championships at Bled. He continued rowing throughout his life and despite his illness, proudly won in a Masters VIII at the 2011 Boston Head of the Charles Regatta. He was an advocate of lightweight rowing and after he began coaching at the Melbourne University Boat Club in 1973 became notable as the first Australian coach to win gold at the 1974 FISA World Championships. He coached many men’s and women’s, interstate and national crews during a long and successful coaching career through the 1970s and early 1980s. Peter was a member of the insurance broking business, Philp Newby & Owen P/L.
