PULLAR, Phillip Galloway (1890-1962)


Phillip Pullar (Prefect 1909).Phillip Galloway Pullar was a boarder at Geelong College commencing in 1907 and leaving in 1909. His address at enrolment was Taurello Avenue, Upper Hawthorn. He was a strong all-rounder and participated in many College sports teams. He was a member of the 1st Cricket XI in 1908-09 and in the match against Wesley College in 1909 he scored 119 not out. He was also in the 1st Football XVIII in 1907-09, and the 1st Rowing VIII in 1908-09. He was Captain of Boats in 1909. He became a School Prefect in 1908 and Head Prefect in 1909. He was also in the Athletics Team in 1908 and its Captain in 1909, the same year he won the Geelong College Cup.

He was born on 4 May 1890, the son of James Pullar and Eliza Alice Rutherford nee Miller. He married Mary Louisa Reilly in 1923. Phillip died at Tatura on 28 March 1962. His son, George Galloway Pullar (1933-1971) was also a boarder at Geelong College. Pegasus in 1910 noted that he was fruit growing in the Goullburn Valley. Pegasus again noted in 1943 that: 'Early in May, Phil. Pullar, stroke of our 1908 Head of the River crew, paid his first visit to the College since the Jubilee and was guided through a much changed and changing school by Alan T. Tait and Roy Lamble. Phil, lives at Tatura and has interests in the fruit industry.'

Pegasus provided a brief obituary in 1962: 'Philip G Pullar was head prefect at the College in 1909, when he also rowed in the Head of the River crew. He was very active in sport in his younger days, being well known as a footballer, golfer and bowler in Mooroopna and Tatura. Mr Pullar was President of the Tatura Agricultural Society from 1923 to 1927, and was interested in several community and church organisations.'

He is listed as ‘Pullar, P G’ on the Geelong College World War I Tablet.

His attestation record for overseas service dated 4 August 1915 discloses that he was an orchardist and that he had spent 3 years in the Geelong College cadets becoming a lieutenant. His service began on 12 August 1915 with F Company, Geelong where he was a Sergeant. He developed arthritis in the left shoulder at the Geelong Military Camp and was discharged as medicaly unfit on 5 November 1915

During the Second World War he enlisted at Tatura, and served in the 16 Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps as a Private up to his discharge on 1 October 1945.

Several award books won by Phillip Pullar are held in the College Heritage Collection. Among these are those awarded as the Dr Baxter Prize for 'manly influence'
