Simon Appel was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2007 for his 'service to pharmacy through a range of professional organisations, and to the community.' Details of his award are as follows:

Chairman, Pharmacists' Asthma Group, National Asthma Council of Australia, since 1998; National Committee Member, 1998-2003; Member, National Asthma Strategy Working Group (representing the Pharmacy Guild of Australia), 1998-2000.
Executive Pharmacist, Pharmacy Guild of Australia, 1995-1999; Member, ACT Branch, 1995-1999.
Member, Victorian Branch Council, Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, 1979-1983; served as Vice-President during this time; National Councillor, for several years.
Chairman, Sigma Company Ltd, for 5 years; Director, for 10 years; Business Manager, 1994.
Practicing pharmacist, 1967-1989.
Chairman, Board of Management, Mentone Grammar School, since 2004; Deputy Chairman, for 8 years during 1990s; President, Old Mentonians Football Club, since 2003.
