Newell Laroy “Paddy” Barrett was born in 1927 to Dr Alfred Horn and Marie Claire Barrett, Cobden. Coming from Cobden State School, Newell was enrolled The Geelong College as a Boarder in Form IIB at in 1941. He completed Form VI in 1946.

Newell was actively involved in many aspects of school life. He was a member of a rowing crew from 1943, including the 1st VIII in 1945 and 1946. In his final year he was Captain of Boats and Morrison House Captain. He was also an L/Cpl in the Cadets, performed with the Glee Club and served on the Rowing and Music Committees.

Following school Newell would become a civil engineer. He worked as a council engineer before being elected as a councillor at the City of Ballarat. Later in life he competed in triathlons, including winning a silver medal in the aged category at the World Championships in 1997.

He was married to Sheila and they had 13 children.

Newell passed away 22 August 2020 at Wendouree, aged 93 years.
