BRAHAM, Algernon Charles (1876-1942)


Algernon Braham was born 12 November 1876, the son of David Braham and Rosie nee Cohen.

He was a boarder at Geelong College where he was enrolled as 'Algy' Braham from 4 October 1889 by David Braham. His address at enrolment was 'The Elms', Glenferrie Rd, Malvern, Victoria. At College he became a member of the 1st Football Team of 1892 and 1893 and its Captain in 1894. He also played with the 1st Cricket XI of 1894.

He was awarded the following prizes:
1891, 2nd, Arithmetic, 4th Class.
1891, 1st, Algebra, 4th Class.
1891, 2nd, French, 4th Class.
1893, 2nd, Arithmetic, University Class.
1893, 2nd, French, University Class.

He later attended Ormond College, the University of Melbourne, where he graduated with a Law degree, and was acting as a barrister and solicitor at the time of his enlistment (No 5536) in the AIF on 14 August, 1915 at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia. He embarked with the 14 Reinforcement Group from Fremantle on HMAT A28 Miltiades on 7 August 1916, served as a Private in 28 Battalion, he was promoted Corporal, and was A/CSM in September 1916.

He was wounded in action at Polygon Wood, on the Western Front, on 20 September 1917, when a piece of gun shot went through his right arm damaging a nerve in his hand. He was granted a 6 months period of recovery and he returned to Australia, embarking on 1 February 1918 where he was discharged from the AIF on 9 April 1918.

He returned to practising law and by 1922 had been appointed Crown Law Officer in the Northern Territory commencing on 15 January 1923. He later practised in Corryong Victoria with the law fiem Hood and Braham.

He died on 17 December 1942 at Corryong.

His brothers, Gerald Malvern Braham (1874-1965); Douglas Clive Braham (1878-1951); Roy Gilbert Braham (1881-1956); Vivian Geoffrey Braham (1883-1969); and Godfrey Septimus Braham (1885-1955), were also educated at Geelong College.
