BROMELL, Hugh Thomas

Hugh Bromell is the son of John Hamilton Bromell (1909-1989) of ‘Illira’ near Cavendish in Victoria’s Western District.

Hugh first attended Hensley Park State School before becoming a boarder at Geelong College from 1952 to 1960. During this period he gained prominence as a rower in the 1st VIII from 1958 to 1960, Captain of Boats in 1958 and most notably in the winning Head of the River crews of 1959 and 1960. An all-round sportsman, he gained House Colours in Athletics, Football, Rowing, Tennis and Swimming and was a member of the Athletics, Debating, Football, PFA and Rowing Committees. In his final year at the College 1960, he was Athletics Captain, 1st XVIII Captain, Vice-Captain of the combined APS Football XVIII, RSM of the Cadet Corps and Head Prefect. His contributions to the School were acknowledged by the award of the Headmaster’s Prize. He also cemented his sporting performance that year by winning the Geelong College Cup and the Nigel Boyes Trophy for Field Games.

After his departure from the College he gained a Diploma of Farm Management from Marcus Oldham College and farmed at Hensleigh near Hamilton. He is a past president of the Hamilton Pastoral and Agricultural Society and a past captain of the Hensleigh Park Rural Fire Brigade.
