CHAPMAN, Professor Colin Burton
Colin Chapman, noted pharmacist and past dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (formerly the Victorian College of Pharmacy), was appointed an Emeritus Professor of Monash University in 2010. This appointment recognised Colin's dedicated service to both the faculty and the University over a long period.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from what was then the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1970, Emeritus Professor Chapman undertook 12 months pre-registration training at Bull and Owen's Pharmacy. During this time he was a tutor resident at Geelong College assisting with students of the then Warrinn House. In 1969 he was called up to serve as a national serviceman in the Australian Regular Army, initially at Puckapunyal, Victoria. He undertook further work and studies with the army at Scheyville, NSW and Ingleburn, NSW, until his discharge in July 1972. In 1972 he married and travelled around Australia before returning to Melbourne to study Veterinary Science at Melbourne University He received a Bachelor of Veterinary Science graduating dux in 1976.
After a year with the Department of Agriculture He commenced studying for a PhD at the Attwood Veterinary Research Laboratory completing this in 1980. He later joined the then Victorian College of Pharmacy, Parkville as head of the School of Pharaceutics in 1987 and was appointed Dean and Director of the College in 1991.
During his period as head of the College of Pharmacy he negotiated its amalgamation with Monash University. After amalgamation he established the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, managed the extension of the Bachelor of Pharmacy program from 3 to 4 years to enable inclusion of clinical placements, enabled introduction of new graduate and postgraduate degrees and oversaw a significant increase in student numbers.
Rural initiatives included the Rural Entry Scheme for secondary students, compulsory rural placements for all pharmacy students at Monash, and the Monash University Pharmacy Scholarship for high achievers from country areas.
At various times, Colin was a member of the Therapeutic Goods Committee and chairman of the Committee of the Heads of Pharmacy Schools in Australia and New Zealand. He assisted in the establishment of the New Zealand and Australian Pharmacy Schools Accreditation Committee and wrote their competency guidelines. He also assisted with the establishment of the Victorian Pharmacy College Foundation in 2001.
In 1998, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Australia.
Following retirement from Monash University, Professor Chapman BPharm, Vic.I.C., BVSc (Hons) PhD Melb continues to work in the field of pharmacy, both locally and internationally. He has participated in projects in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
Colin Chapman was enrolled at Geelong College in 1960, departing in December 1966. At College, he was a member of the Swimming Team for two years from 1965 to 1966, vice captain of the 4th XVIII FootballTeam of 1964 and in 1965 and 1966 a member of the 2nd XVIII Football Team. In 1963, he was a member of the Athletics Team. He was both a House Prefect and School Prefect in 1966.
