CURRIE, William John (1855-1887)


William Currie, son of pioneering pastoralist and College supporter, John Lang Currie (1818-1898), was enrolled at Geelong College in 1867.

He is listed as William Currie of Larra Cressy in the Annual Report Prize Lists as follows:
1867 3rd, Latin, 4th Class.

Alexander Henderson in 'Hendersons Australian Families' briefly described him:

William John Currie, was born at Geelong, Victoria, 1st May, 1855; educated at Geelong College and Cirencester College, England; took up a pastoral career, and owned a property at Wilcannia, New South Wales. He was a member of the first exploratory expedition to New Guinea.

William John Currie died on 13th July, 1887, while on a visit to Japan. Unmarried (as of 1941).

His brothers John Lang Currie (1856-1935), and James Cedric Currie (1860-1907), were also educated at Geelong College.
