GIBB, Dr Herbert Ian (1898-1972)
Herbert Ian Gibb was born on 11 May 1898, the son of Herbert Buchanan Gibb and Ellen nee Grey. Enrolled at Geelong College in 1908 his address at the time was Pakington St, Geelong. Up to 1908 he gained these academic awards:
1908, 2nd, English, Junior College 3rd Form.
1908, 1st, Geography, Junior College 3rd Form.
1908, 1st, Scripture, Junior College 3rd Form.
In 1915 and 1916 he became a School Prefect.
He later went to Ormond College, The University of Melbourne, he completed 2nd year Medicine, before enlisting (No 39641) in the AIF on 26 November 1917 as a Gunner with the 10th Field Artillery Brigade. He was posted to the 35th Field Artillery Reinforcements, and sailed on 27 April 1918 on
SS Port Darwin
. Posted first to 3rd Battery, Heytesbury Camp, then to 37th Battery, 10 FAB, with which he served in France and Belgium. He returned to Australia, embarking on 26 February 1919, and was demobilised on 2 May.
He completed his medical studies after the war, and during the Second World War served with 10 Field Ambulance up to the time of his discharge on 15 September 1948. He died in 1972.
His sons, John Grey Gibb (1933-1994) and
Donald Menzies Gibb (1937-2017)
, were also educated at Geelong College.
