John William Gilmore was born 17 June 1926 near Shepparton to World War I veteran William Samuel Gilmore and his wife Violet Gilmore. When John was young, the family moved to Geelong West, his father working as a railway employee.

John was enrolled at Geelong College 13 February 1941 in Form IV as a Day Student, having previously attended Geelong High School. He left in 1942 having completed his School Intermediate Certificate.

After school John worked with Australian Paper Manufacturers (APM) and remained with them for 10 years. During those years he also served with the AIF in North Borneo and New Britain. Following his service John graduated in Commerce and Social Studies at the University of Melbourne.

In 1953 John married Ruth Lockhart in Ballarat, before they embarked on a trip to England. He joined Cadbury Bros there and was production manager at Bournville in Birmingham and factory manager at Wallasey on Merseyside for the next 14 years. He then transferred to Cadbury Schweppes in New Zealand in 1967 and retired as Company Director in 1986. In his retirement, John enjoyed golfing, bowls or playing at the Otago Bridge Club when not entertaining the grandchildren.

John passed away 6 May 2019 at St Clair, New Zealand, aged 92 years.
