KEARNEY, Michael Joseph (1869-1945)

Michael Kearney was enrolled at Geelong College on 24 March 1881. He left in 1890. He was enrolled by M J Kearney.

Victorian Football Association (VDA) player, and son of Michael Kearney and his wife Jane nee Dunn, and brother of the equally talented 'Gus' Kearney, Michael Kearney was a talented sportsman at College. From 1883 to 1890 he played in the 1st Football Team and from 1886 to 1890 in the 1st Cricket XI. In 1886 he won the Geelong College Cup.

He gained the following academic awards:
1882, 1st, Latin, 2nd Class.
1883, 1st, Gymnastics, 1st Division.
1889, 1st, Gymnastics, 2nd Class.
1889, Champion Gymnast
1890, 1st, Elocution

Pegasus described him:
‘Like other Collegians of that generation, he played senior football with Geelong Football Club while still at school; he played later with Essendon, being in their 1893 champion team. He worked up a stock agency business, which he carried on at Shepparton, Tatura and Echuca. He was in Echuca for 35 years and was widely known for his wit and sense of humour.’

His brother, Augustus Daniel Kearney (1870-1907), was also educated at Geelong College.
