Ian Wilfred Macmillan was Headmaster of the Preparatory School from 1977 to 1986. During his tenure numbers at the School grew from 395 to 511 and he was also the instigator of the Enviro Centre.

With a background in commerce and education, prior to Ian’s appointment at the Preparatory School, he had taught at Caulfield Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and Cochrane High School, Albert Canada. He was also a member of the Parliamentary Committee of Special Education, Australian Remedial Association, and Society of Educational Counsellors.

In 1987 Ian left the Geelong College to take up an appointment as Headmaster of St Paul’s Church of England School in Woodleigh.

Whilst at College Ian was completing a MA in Psychology, and he later opened an education and counselling psychology practice.

Ian’s connection to the College began in 1947 when he was enrolled as a boarder by his father, Wilfred, an old collegian. Ian’s brother Don was also attending the school.

Ian was involved in almost every aspect of school life, from sport, cadets to music. In Senior School he served on multiple committees such as various sports, the PFA and Music. He achieved many honours, colours and caps over the years, having been part of the 1st VIII rowing crew, Swimming, Athletics Team and 1st XVIII football team. He was captain of the Athletics team in 1954, as well as Prefect 1953-1954 and Morrison House Captain in 1954. His acting credentials are seen in multiple Glee Club productions. He played the role of Ralph Rickshaw in the 1954 production of HMS Pinafore.

Ian's career was highlighted for the centenary of the Preparatory School in the June 2021 Ad Astra.
