MAHAR, Alan (1934-2024)

Alan Mahar was a well-respected teacher at the College from 1960 to 1972. He became a Senior English teacher and served as McArthur Housemaster from 1962 to 1967 before taking on the role of Mackie Housemaster in 1969 (to 1972). Mahar was an influential teacher and was involved in many parts of school life including starting a Film Club, serving as Pegasus Editor and compiling archival copies of the Pegasus and Ad Astra.

When Alan departed, it was written in the Pegasus (1973):
“There was scarcely a facet of College life untouched by Alan's vitality and concern. To attempt to give an account of his work here would be not only long, but also incomplete, because so much of his work is known only to himself and the many boys he helped.”
