MITCHELL, Stuart Kingsley (1892-1963)
Stuart Kingsley Mitchell was born on the 18 September 1892, the son of Hans Lemon Mitchell and Kate Jane nee Wheaton, of Lygan Street, Stawell, he was educated at Stawell Grammar School and Geelong College where he was enrolled as a boarder in February 1902. His address reported at the time of enrolment was Mitchell Bros & Whyte, Stawell.
He was working as an auctioneer when he enlisted (No 10894) during World War I on 2 February 1916 with 17th Reinforcement Group to 8 Battalion. He embarked for France on
HMAT A34 Persic
on 3 June 1916, with 3rd Divisional Train, 22nd Company AASC, and served as a Driver through the last years of the war. He took leave to London in February 1918, and again in February 1919, as well as leave to Paris in January 1919.
Stuart Mitchell returned to Australia, embarking on 3 July 1919 on
HMT Prinz Hubertus
.
He served with the Volunteer Defence Corps (VFC) in Australia during World War II.
