John was born to Howard and Anne Quinton in 1942. He was enrolled as a boarder at The Geelong College in 1957 in Form IVB. John was soon involved in many parts of school life, from sports to cadets. He was a member of the Head of the River winning 1st VIII in 1959 and 1960 and served on the Rowing Committee in 1960. He also played in the 1st XVIII football team in 1960. John achieved the rank of Sergeant in the Cadets and supervised the mortar crew in for the Annual Gymkhana in 1959. A member of Shannon House, John received House rowing and football colours.

Following school John would go on to pursue a career in the electrical industry. In the years prior to his retirement in 2002 John and his wife Carmel owned a Retravision store in Tenterfield, NSW.

John passed away 7 April 2019, aged 76 years.
