RUTHERFORD, Andrew James (1968-2022)

Andrew was enrolled at The Geelong College in 1980, starting in Year 7. An academic student, Andrew excelled in the classroom. In year 8 he received a distinction in the Australian Mathematics Competition and repeated in Year 9 Melbourne University Mathematics Competition (Year 10 level). He was also a keen member of the Chess Club and Debating team. Andrew also received the Robert Gillespie Prize for Scripture in 1982 and School Honours for Academic Achievement. He scored a perfect 100 in Ancient Greek and Latin. Andrew was Dux in 1985.

Andrew’s brother Nick also attended the College (OGC 1988).

After school Andrew studied at the University of Melbourne, achieving a BA (Hons) in English and Philosophy in 1989. He went on to be a writer and editor. He was a film and literary reviewer, and taught at the University of Melbourne. He was editor of the Scripsi literary magazine from 1990-1994. Later he was a columnist for the Republican magazine and freelance editor.

Andrew passed away 11 June 2002, aged 54.
