Thomas Evan Rand was a bugler in the Geelong College cadets under Drum Major Rashleigh. In April 1911, Thomas Rand travelled to Europe with the Victorian detachment of Mounted Cadets under the command of Captain A Rushall as a representative to the coronation celebrations of King George V. His description of this trip was published in Pegasus in 1912. During the trip he was presented with a bugle by Field Marshall Lord Roberts.

Thomas Rand entered the School as a boarder in 1908, attending until 1913, although he was away for much of 1911 and is recorded as re-entering in 1912. His father, Thomas Rand (1862-1934) had previously been a student at the School in 1879.

T E Rand won the Champion Gymnasts Prize in 1912 and the boarders’ handicap gymnastic prize in 1913. In 1913, he was a member of the College 1st Football Team.

He left School in 1913 and enlisted in the AFC 27 January, 1916 embarking on the troop ship Orsova for Egypt on 16 March. Pegasus reported that ‘Tom Rand writes from Egypt to the effect that, in spite of sand and bad roads, he is having a good time despatch riding on his Indian motor cycle' . In May 1918 Pegasus reported that Lieutenant Tom Rand was ‘attached to the Flying Corps in Egypt where he obtained a commission. He left for England last October, and is now an instructor at one of the English Flying Schools.’

His father, Thomas Rand (1862-1938 and brother, Robert Reginald Rand (1902-1944) OGC 1912-1914, 1918 also attended Geelong College.
