READ, Alexander George Frederick (1894-1964)
Alexander George Frederick Read was born on 4 September 1894, the son of Alexander Read, and his second wife, Elizabeth Green nee Rae. He boarded at Geelong College from 1909. His address at enrolment was Lawalluk, Grenville.
During World War I, he enlisted (No. 2745) in the AIF at Geelong on 2 June 1916, embarking on HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916 for France, transferring to the Benalla at Sierra Leone on 16 December 1916 and disembarking in England at Devonport on 9 January 1917 to serve with 46 Battalion. He was ill by the time he arrived in England in 1917 and was eventually invalided back to Australia, embarking on 27 July 1917. At the time of his enlistment he described himself as a station hand.
He died in Queensland on 27 June 1964.
