REID, John William (1895-1977)


John William Reid was born on 14 September 1895 at Tibooburra, NSW, the son of William Hatrick Reid and Janet Hamilton Howat nee Mcilwraith.

He was enrolled at Geelong College in 1906, leaving in 1913. His address at the time of enrolment was Virginia St, Newtown, Geelong. He later attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College, NSW.

He enlisted (No. 3068) as a Trooper in the AIF on5 August 1916 and embarked with the 23rd Reinforcement Group on HMAT A25 Anglo Egyptian on 31 January 1917, serving in Palestine with the 8th Light Horse (B Squadron). He returned to Australia on HMT Malta, embarking on 3 July 1919.

His older brother, Ronald Armstrong Reid (1892-1916), also educated at Geelong College, was killed while serving with 15 Battalion at Pozieres on 8 August 1916.

His younger brother, Alexander Illistrin Reid (1907-2002), was also educated at Geelong College.
