RHIND, Hector George Spence (1895-1967)
Hector George Rhind was born on 9 July 1895, the son of David Rhind.
He entered Geelong College in 1909. His address then was 'Chevy', Wallington.
During World War I, he enlisted (No. 483) as a Sapper, Engineer Details, in the AIF on 2 May 1916 and embarked for France, transferring to 2nd Anzac Cycling Company. After service there, he returned to Australia, embarking on 12 May 1918.
His brother, Lieutenant James Morison Rhind, 60 Battalion, was reported missing on 19 July 1916 at Fromelles. At a subsequent Court of Enquiry on 22 August 1917 he was confirmed to have died, when eighteen officers of 59 and 60 Battalion were killed or died of wounds sustained that day. James Rhind's name is commemorated in VC Corner Australian Cemetery, France, on Panel 18.
