ROLLAND, John Henry Maitland (1911-1938)

ROLLAND, John Henry Maitland (1911-1938) John Rolland was a boarder of the years 1923 to 1927, who drowned in January, 1938 when attempting to rescue another swimmer at Barwon Heads.

He had previously been a student at Canberra State School. His parents were Henry Maitland Rolland and Euphemia Lyell Grieve. The wrought iron memorial gates at Mackie House were presented by his family. The inscription on the memorial bronze is: ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for a stranger.’
