James Russell studied at Winchelsea State School before enrolment at Geelong College from 1 February 1996 to 2005. A versatile and talented sportsman he was a member of the Athletics Team at College in 2001, 2002 and 2005, the Hockey Squad and Year 9 hockey teams of 2002 and rowed with the 2nd VIII in 2004 and the 1st VIII of 2005. He was awarded the James Fraser Sutherland Prize and the Principals Art Prize in 2005.
His great grandfather, James, OGC 1914; grandfather, Ron, OGC 1937; father, Peter, OGC 1965; his brothers, Henry, OGC 2008, and Will, OGC 2009; were all educated at College. His mother, Libby Russell was, for many years, Head of the Junior School - Campbell House. James died on 15 January 2017.
