SLOANE, William Howard (1901-1981)

William Howard Sloane, romantic poet and beekeeper was born at Corowa to parents William Sloane and Jane Gordon and was one of three brothers, Andrew Gordon Sloane (1899-1964) and Ian Fyfe Sloane (1903-1986) to be educated at Geelong College. Howard had previously attended Brighton Grammar School before attending Geelong College, initially as a day student from 1916 to June 1919 and then as a boarder until 1921. He was a School Prefect in 1921 and a voluntary Librarian.

Howard is notable for his publication of 'Beehive Management in Australia' in 1975, based on a selection of articles published in 'The Australasian Beekeeper' . In 'Beehive Management' , he describes his introduction to beekeeping while a student at Geelong College in 1919 when he and a group of other boys visited the You Yangs on a bicycle tour from the School. He also published a book of poetry entitled “Australian Reverie”. His interest in both writing and the natural world were visible at College with several articles published in Pegasus while he was a student.
