SMITH, James Archibald 'Arch' (1931-2017)
James Archibald Smith, pastoralist of Yarrawalla South and Jarklin Districts, near Pyramid Hill, Northern Victoria, boarded at Geelong College from 8 February 1945 to December 1946 becoming a member of Calvert House. At enrolment, his address was 'Craigielea', Gulpa, NSW. He had previously attended Deniliquin High School.
He was born on 11 January 1931, son of J L Smith.
His extensive community service included membership of the CFA for over 55 years, of the Boort Pyramid Water Services Committee - Murray Goulburn Water (1990-2000), President of the Hall Committee (1972-77) that established the Yarrawalla Community Centre, and local Masonic Lodges (1963-2017) with various senior roles. He was awarded CFA Service Awards including the Queens Medal and Good Conduct Medals.
'Arch' passed away at Boort Hospital, aged 86 years, on 7 December 2017. His wife of 58 years, Mary Jeanette nee Wallace, had predecesed him on 2 June 2016.
His brother, Reginald Noel Smith (1927-2002), was also educated at Geelong College. Sons Chris (OGC 1977) and Ash (OGC 1979) also boarded at College.
