SMITH, Lindsay Brian (1940-2007)
Actor and Director, Lindsay Smith, known as ‘Lindzee’, was a committed avant-gardist of the theatre directing both locally and internationally. Known as one of the founders of the Australian Performing Group he was also closely associated with Melbourne’s La Mama Theatre during its development and later at the more underground Pram Factory. Smith first acted in the 1966 production of August Strindberg’s Crimes and Crimes. He was later associated with a Pram Factory ensemble called ‘Nighshift’ with Smith producing ‘The Fitzroy Yank and Dreamers of the Absolute. Nighshift also performed in Sydney, Perth and New York. He suffered from Lupus, a systemic autoimmune disease for many years before his death on 24 February 2007.

Smith was born in Geelong and went to Geelong High School before continuing his education at Geelong College from 1955 to 1957. He was the Under 15 Swimming Champion and later, a member of the 1st Football XVIII in 1957 as well as continuing a role on the Swimming Committee in 1956 and 1957. He was a lso a cadet in the College Cadet Corps. He afterwards went to Monash then Melbourne University. It was at University that he became an actor. His obituary in the Melbourne Age recounts an incident from his College days described by his brother Garth. Smith was ‘a keen sportsman and always into stunts’. ‘He had a fraught relationship with Martyn Buntine, the Principal at Geelong College, over what he perceived as religious discrimination: when the Pope died, he sarcastically painted ‘Cardinal Buntine for Pope’ in large letters on the tennis court which got him into trouble; he also got caned for nailing a toilet seat to the chair the Principal used for school assembly. He continued his sporting activity after he left College. Pegasus published a facetious set of observations about sixth form members in December, 1957. How apt these were is unknown. Lindzee was noted with nickname 'The King'. PA - Another Surf Club. A - To Drive an MG to School. PE - Professional Matriculation student.
