Russell Sinclair Smith was born 17 March 1936 to Allan and Jean Smith, Geelong. Russell was enrolled at Geelong College in 1948, starting Form UIVA. He rode his bike to school every day and was a conscientious student. After coming second in his class in 1950 in he was Dux of Form IV. In the same year, 1951, he also received an Award of Merit for the Swimming Exams conducted by the Royal Life Saving Society. Russell then received the James Boyd Scholarship for 1952.

After completing Form V in 1952, Russell left school and would go on to work with the Commonwealth Bank before joining Chase Manhattan in Melbourne, later to be called Chase NBA, and now known as First National. After a time at Harvard University he became Managing Director of the Bank.

Russell was an active member of the Australian Club for 42 years. He appreciated the traditions of the Club and enjoyed himself immensely playing Bridge accompanied by his lovely wife, Margie. Russell also loved meeting new people and keeping in touch with past colleagues which the Club facilitated greatly. Russell served on the General Committee from 1993- 1966 and was also Bridge Convenor from 1996-1999 during which time he instigated bridge trips to Uluru, Lord Howe Island and to many golf clubs around Australia which were thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.

Russell passed away 22 June 2020. Besides being an invaluable mentor to many young bankers, Russell was a loving family man and always put his family first. He leaves behind him his beautiful wife, Margie, two daughters, Lisa and Catherine and seven grandchildren, Jessica, Eliza, Emily, Charlotte, Harry, Jacqueline and Lucinda and son in-law Damian.
