SPRIGG, James Gordon Harvey (1896-1988)


Born at Brighton on 8 June 1896, James Sprigg was the son of James Gordon Sprigg and Jane Maud Bertha nee Harvey.

He was first educated at Melbourne Grammar School and then enrolled at Geelong College in February 1911 by Alfred H Shaw. His address at the time was Inkerman Rd, East St Kilda. He left College in December 1913. At College he wa a membeof the 1st Rowing VIII in1913, the Athletics Team in 1913 and the 1st Football XVIII in 1912 and 1913. His World War I Attestation record indicates that he spent four years in the Senior Cadets.

After leaving College he played three football games for the St Kilda Football Club in the Victorian Football League during 1915.

He enlisted (No.55218) as a Private in the AIF on 14 November 1917. The following year, 1918, he married Ethel Anne Perry, daughter of Samuel James and Elizabeth Jane Perry. They resided at Benwarrin, Malvern.

On 5 June 1918 he embarked for France from Sydney with the 5th General Service Reinforcement Group on RMS Orontes, joining 8 Battalion. He took leave with pay from 23 April until 23 October 1919 under the Repatriation and Demobilisation Scheme, in order to study Hardware with 'Willis, Lindall and Eyrell', of Lloyd's Avenue, London. He returned to Australia, embarking on 8 September 1919.
