SWORD, Robert Stevenson (1891-1964)
Robert Sword was born on 23 August 1891, the son of Thomas Stevenson Sword and Adele Seranette nee Cameron.
He was enrolled at Geelong College in 1908 with an entry address of Land Court, Brisbane, Queensland. He was in the Athletics Team in 1909.
Having enlisted (No. 893) at Longreach in the AIF on 21 December 1914 as a Private in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment, 1st Light Horse Brigade (4th Reinforcements), he embarked for Egypt on HMAT A15 Star of England on 6 April 1915. He was at Gallipoli, then served in France where he transferred to 23 Field Artillery Brigade (FAB) on 21 October 1916. He then transferred to the 3rd Division Heavy Trench Mortar Battery on 24 August 1917, having been promoted 2nd Lieutenant on 21 June 1917, then Lieutenant on 1 August 1917.
He embarked for return to Australia on HMT Euripides on 30 January 1918.
Pegasus reported his death in December 1964:
'Robert S Sword attended the College and was a member of the senior athletics team. Most of his life was spent on the land at Longreach, (Queensland). He died this year in Brisbane after a long illness.'
He died on 11 July 1964.
