TAYLOR, John Douglas (1931-2016)
John was born at in Tasmania on 31 March 1931 and came to the College as a boarder after attending Scotch College, Launceston. Enrolled from 8 February 1945 to August 1948, John stayed in touch with the College throughout his life.
Among John’s activities at College was membership of the Ramblers Guild with whom, in 1947, he participated in the first recorded landing on Rodondo Island, Bass Strait and on the College trip to Mt Conner in Central Australia aboard the two four-wheel drive Ford trucks nicknamed ‘Bucking Bertha’ and ‘Leaping Lena’. Among those who funded these trucks were Sir Keith Murdoch and John’s father, Robert Reginald Taylor (1899-1982), an Old Collegian, who was a student at the College during the years of World War I. A keen movie cameraman, John donated several of his very rare College videos of 1946 and 1947 to the College Archive.
John died on 16 October 2016.
