THEOBALD, Dr John Hamilton (1929-2015)
John Theobald was born on 18 August 1929 in Taroom, Queensland, the son of Austin Alfred Theobald and Priscilla C nee Hamilton. The family later moved to a property in north-east Victoria in the 1940s. John attended Geelong College from 8 February 1945 to December 1947, after his father ‘interviewed’ several other heads of independent schools. He had previously attended Wodonga Higher Elementary School. In his autobiography, John gave a vivid picture of the school and wrote that his years there were among the happiest of his life. John was a member of Shannon House, the College Band and Secretary of the College PFA branch.
He attended the Mildura Branch University in 1947, then the University of Melbourne where he graduated BSc in 1955 and BEd in 1958. He taught briefly in schools and in 1963 was appointed to the founding staff of the Faculty of Education at Monash University where he spent his entire career eventually becoming Director of the Diploma of Education. He was awarded a PHD from Monash University in 1978. He published extensively during his lifetime including 'Classroom Testing Principles and Practice'
A long-time member of Waverly Golf Club, he also became a small-scale farmer, fattening cattle and enjoying travel and living in France. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie and his two children, Bruce and Gretta. He died at Castlemaine, Victoria on 14 August 2015.
His brother, Brian Charles Theobald (1933-1979), was also educated at Geelong College.
