THOMAS, Dr Edmund Barrington ‘Barry’ (1929-2009),
'Barry' Thomas, educationist and publisher, attended the College as a boarder from 1944 to 1946 having previously been at Terang High School.
He trained as a teacher firstly at Stawell State School, then Ballarat Teachers College, and Melbourne University where he completed a BComm in 1951. Following postings to Nhill High School (1952-), Werribee High School (1962-, Charlton High School (1966-) as Principal and Heywood High School (1968-) as Principal, he spent 15 months on leave studying at the University of Alberta, Canada. In 1971, he was appointed Lecturer in Educational Administration at the University of Papua New Guinea, then Senior Lecturer in 1973. He was elected Dean of Education there in 1973-74 and became a member of the University Council in 1972-73. In 1976, he was appointed to the Earle Page College at the University of New England and promptly formed the New England Branch of the OGCA.
He returned to Pt Lonsdale to live in 1979 although he continued to work part-time as a Senior Lecturer at the University of New England until about 1983. Around this time he commenced private practice as an educational consultant and after the completion of his Armidale contract commenced lecturing in Educational Administration at Deakin University in 1984. ‘Barry’ published several books and the educational newsletter ‘The Professional Reading Guide for Educational Administrators’ for over 21 years.
