THOMAS, James William (1940-2015)
James William Thomas was the well-known owner of the business, ‘Thomas Jewellers’.
He was enrolled at College from 14 February 1952 to December 1958 having previously studied at Pleasant Street State School, Ballarat. In 1957 and 1958 he played in both the 1st Cricket and 1st Football Teams. An accomplished and determined sportsman he was also a member of the Athletics Team and a House Tennis player in 1958. He was also a Cadet, Treasurer of the PFA Committee, and winner of The Stanley Calvert Prize for senior debating. His address at enrolment was 1333 Webster St, Ballarat.
After College he studied at Melbourne University before joining the family business in 1962. Despite not rowing at College, he later rowed in a double scull for many years, partnering boat builder, Jeff Sykes to win several Australian championships.
He led the expansion of the Ballarat business establishing retail stores in Geelong, Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury and Bourke St, Melbourne.
He died on 30 August 2015, aged 75 years.
