VARCOE-COCKS, John (1938-2021)

John boarded at The Geelong College from 1948 to 1956, starting in Form Middle IV. John came from Wakool, NSW were his parents Arnott, a grazier, and Lindsay lived. John was an active student, playing his part in many sports, cadets and committees. He played second ruck in the 1st XVIII, his coach reporting in the ‘Pegasus’ that John was “improved throughout the season at times was very effective in ruck and resting.”

In 1955 John joined the newly formed United Nations Committee under Mr Quick. The group organised a number of events and members regularly attended the monthly meetings of "The Geelong United Nations Group." John was a key player in the 3rd XVIII Football team which won the Vic Profitt Trophy in 1955. He was also a keen tennis player, winning the Boys Doubles Championship in 1956.

John was awarded Morrison General House Colours, as well as for Tennis and Football. He was awarded School Colours for Football in 1956. In this same year, his final year at College, John was a School Prefect.

John received an Ormond residential scholarship in 1957 and continued at Melbourne University studying Commerce. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor degree. John remained in Melbourne where he married and become father of three.

John passed away 6 July 2021, aged 83 years.
