WALKER, William Leslie (1899-1960)


William Leslie Walker was born on 3 September 1899, the son of David Walker (c1853-1937) and Christina nee Adcock (c1864-1926).

He was enrolled at Geelong College on 9 February 1914, leaving in December of that same year. His address at enrolment was 29 Fenwick St, Geelong and he was recorded as previously attending Flinders State School.

The Geelong Advertiser published the following legal notice in June 1923:
'NOTICE is hereby given that the Partnership heretofore existing between David Walker, David Stanley Walker, and William Leslie Walker, carrying on business as Produce Merchants at Moorabool Street, Geelong, under the firm name of 'D Walker & Sons' — will be dissolved by mutual agreement as and from the 1st day of July, 1923. The said David Walker is retiring from the said business, which will in future be carried on by the said David Stanley Walker and William Leslie Walker under the old firm name of 'D. Walker & Sons'. All moneys owing to and all accounts owing by the said firm will be received and paid by the said David Stanley Walker and William Leslie Walker.

In 1937 he married Myra Janet McKenzie.

He was listed in the electoral rolls as a grocer in 1925 at 18 Aberdeen St, Geelong with father or brother, David; in 1931, 1934, 1936, and 1937 at 41 Upper Skene St, grocer. In 1942, he was listed as a manager at Raglan Parade, Warrnambool with his wife Myra Janet Walker. In 1949 and 1954 he and Myra were back at 41 Upper Skene St, Newtown, manager.

William Leslie Walker is listed as Walker W L on the Geelong College World War I Memorial Tablet however no service record has been located to confirm this.

He died at Geelong on 29 September 1960 and was interred at Geelong Western Cemetery on 30 September 1960.

His brother, Stanley David Walker (1894-1964), was also educated at Geelong College.
