'Born in Wagga Wagga NSW in 1928, David Wallace Smith entered Geelong College Preparatory School in 1940 as a boarder in Junior House. A keen and talented sportsman from an early age, David captained the Junior Cricket and Football teams during his time in the Junior School. He went on to become Captain of the Junior School in 1942. In Senior School, David played in the 1st XVIII Football teams of 1945 and 1947. In 1946 and 1947, as a member of the 1st XI Cricket team ─ and a fine leg spin bowler ─ David was a part of two successful cricket premierships. This feat had not been achieved before in the College’s history. David completed his education at Geelong College in 1947, and remained a proud Old Collegian always.

Following school, he joined his grandfather’s stock and share broking firm, Wallace H. Smith & Co as a stockbroker, a profession he continued his entire working life until his retirement from Merrill Lynch in 1998.

An avid golfer, a dedicated supporter of the Melbourne Football Club, a true gentleman and devoted family man, he was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

David was the dearly loved husband of Margaret for 66 years. Loving father to Andrew, Simon and Richard. Adored father-in-law to Patty, Louise and Sarah. Cherished grandfather to Nick, Alex, Matthew, Jono, Tully and Olivia, and their partners, Emma, Katherine, Liz and Terese. Precious great-grandfather to Daisy, and wonderful older brother to Graeme Wallace Smith (OGC 1946), David died in December 2018 and was privately cremated. A celebration of his life was held at The Metropolitan Golf Club on the 23 January 2019.'
