WHYTE, Louis Australia (1852-1911)

WHYTE, Louis Australia (1852-1911) Tennis and golf champion, Louis A Whyte was the son of Charles Ibbotson (or James) Whyte (c.1813-1883), a wealthy squatter who built the National Trust House ‘The Heights’ at Geelong in 1855.

Charles’ daughter and Louis Australia’s mother, Minna, inherited ‘The Heights” and her sister Fanny Matilda inherited ‘Spray Farm’. Louis was a student of the College from about 1866 until matriculating in 1870. He was a member of the College Council from 1908 to 1910. His sons, Thomas Napier (1848-1904), Ernest Alma (1855-1909) and Louis Melville Whyte (1890-1975) also attended the School. His son, Louis Melville Whyte was a prominent benefactor of the School from whom much of the land was acquired overlooking the Barwon River and upon which the Preparatory School was later built. A First Prize Book awarded to Louis Whyte for Portrait Drawing in 1866 is held in the College Archives.
