YALLAND, George Hector (1894-1974)
George Hector Yalland was born 4 February 1894, the son of James Hedley Yalland and Mary Jane nee Thompson.
He was enrolled at Geelong College by J H Yalland in 1908 who gave his address as 134 Skene St, Geelong.
During World War I, when he enlisted (No 7191) as a Lance Corporal at Cootamundra, NSW on 26 October 1916, he was working there as a school teacher. He embarked from Sydney with 2 Battalion (24th Reinforcement Group) as an Acting Sergeant on RMS Osterly on 10 February 1917. He was at the School of Musketry, Tidworth, on 30 April, and on the instructional taff before embarking for France on 2 November. He returned to England to attend an Officer Training Course (OTC) on 12 January 1918, and rejoined his unit on 23 February. He suffered illness on 15 March and was discovered to have a hydatid cyst on his left kidney. He was evacuated to England by HS Jan Breydel on 7 August 1918 and returned to Australia on HMT Borda, embarking on 20 October 1918.
He died on 10 May 1974.
