YULE,
Ian Russell (1943-2025)
Ian Russell Yule was a dedicated educator and school leader whose life
was marked by a deep commitment to teaching, social justice, and reconciliation
with First Nations peoples in Australia. The son of Alec and Jean Yule, he grew
up alongside his siblings, including Sandy, Ruth, Margie, and Jane.
Educated from 1955 to 1961, Yule distinguished himself as both a scholar
and an active contributor to school life. He earned his Matriculation
Certificate and held numerous leadership roles, including House Prefect in his
final year. He was a recipient of the H. V. McKay Scholarship (1958) and was
involved broadly across school activities - serving on councils and committees, editing the Pegasus, and participating in rifle and tennis teams.
Yule pursued a lifelong career in education, particularly in Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander communities. Over nearly two decades, he taught and
led in institutions such as Shepherdson College on Elcho Island, Yipirinya
School, and Yirara College in Alice Springs, and Worawa Aboriginal College in
Victoria, where he served as Principal before relocating to Townsville in 1996.
His work reflected extensive knowledge of Aboriginal cultures and a strong
commitment to preserving cultural values, supporting land rights, and advancing
educational opportunities. In 1997, he was appointed Principal (Secondary) at
Shalom Christian College in Townsville, helping to expand its senior offerings.
Known for his gentle nature and principled
leadership, Yule was widely respected for his dedication to community and
education. He is survived by his wife, Ro; daughters Deb and Jenn; and a large
extended family. His legacy endures through the many students and communities
he served, and through his enduring contributions to education and
reconciliation in Australia.
