Tim
boarded at the College from 1956 to 1958. During his time here he boarded in Warrinn House, played cricket and
football, and rowed in the 1st VIII. He received multiple rowing
honours including Shannon House rowing colour, rowing cap, School rowing colour
and rowing honour.
Tim Burrows (known as “Burra”) was a much liked, well known and fearless character when he was a boarder at Geelong College from 1956 to 1958. Under no circumstances would he shy away from a challenge particularly when it came to “stretching the rules”. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a deep resonant laugh.
Very
strong for his age he was an exceptional rower and had the bow seat in the 1958
1st VIII. This crew came second to Melbourne Grammar in the 1958
Head of the River.
Tim was
brought up at Mount Melville, a sheep and cattle property near Cavendish in the
Western District of Victoria. After school he worked as a jackeroo at some
famous pastoral properties including Chatsworth House near Mortlake in
Victoria. He was the Overseer at Boonoke near Deniliquin in NSW.
He spent the majority of his adult years in the South Island of New Zealand where he was a farmer and a stock agent. He was an excellent sportsman playing cricket and golf. He also coached junior rugby.
Tim was one of a rare breed – he became a legend in his own lifetime.
Tim married Penny White and they have four children, Richard, Simon, Christina and Sam.
After a long period of ill health, Tim died at home in Geraldine, New Zealand.
By
Alistair McArthur, retired educator and lifelong friend of Tim Burrows since
they were at Geelong College together in the 1950’s. Many thanks for
contributions from friends and Tim’s family.
