CARDINAL, Belinda
Dr Belinda Cardinal (OGC 1993) is a pioneering figure in the field of genetics, whose career spans academia, agriculture, and entrepreneurship. After leaving school, she studied science and law at Deakin University before committing to genetics. She earned a PhD from The University of Melbourne, where she later became a respected lecturer. Her academic contributions include research publications and international conference presentations, notably on newly identified bat species and alpaca genomics.
Driven by a passion for practical science and sustainable agriculture, Cardinal transitioned from academia to hands-on farming. She founded a licensed goat dairy and cheesemaking business and co-founded Caprotek, a breeding and genetics consultancy that supports boutique dairies and livestock producers. Her work includes genetic analysis, breeding program design, and the importation of elite livestock genetics. Among her most notable achievements is the successful importation of genetic material to breed Australia’s first Valais Blacknose Sheep, a milestone in livestock diversification.
Balancing scientific rigour with entrepreneurial spirit, Cardinal has become a leader in livestock genetics, helping farmers overcome the challenges of improving herds in a geographically isolated market. Her work continues to shape the future of dairy goat farming and livestock breeding in Australia.
Cardinal has also contributed to the industry in a volunteer capacity as a member of the Ruminant Genetics Trade Advisory Group, Victorian Farmers Federation - Goat Industry Advisory Group committee, and the federal Director of the Dairy Goat Association of Australia. She is currently the Australian Dairy Goats Inc. President and serves on the Goat Industry Council of Australia and the Goat Industry Research and Development Adoption Committee.
Her journey began at The Geelong College, where she attended from 1988 to 1993. A dedicated athlete, she earned multiple colours in hockey, reaching the 1st XI team, and received Calvert House Colours for cross country and swimming.
