HORVAT, Chantel
Chantel Horvat (OGC 2016) is a dynamic Australian basketballer whose career spans elite competition across multiple continents. Highly regarded for her versatility and athleticism, Horvat has represented Australia internationally and played professionally in Europe, the United States, and Australia.
After developing her skills through the Geelong United juniors' program, Horvat debuted for the senior Geelong Supercats at age 14, becoming the youngest player in SEABL history. Returning in 2017, she was named to the league's second all-league team.
Horvat earned a scholarship to the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), where she continued to develop. She featured on the AIS SEABL roster and represented Victoria Country and Victoria at multiple national championships. She also played a key role in the Australian Gems’ bronze medal campaign at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup 2015.
Following her time at the AIS, Horvat began a five-year collegiate career at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), becoming the first Australian woman in the Bruins basketball program. At UCLA, she helped the team reach the NCAA Elite 8 and Sweet 16 and earned academic honours including the Directors Honor Roll, PAC-12 Academic Honor Roll, and UCLA All-Academic Team. After graduating with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and Geography and a minor in Anthropology, she joined the LA Sparks training camp.
Horvat’s professional career began in Poland, followed by stints in Turkey and Spain, including with powerhouse Avenida. In 2023, she made her senior debut for the Australia Opals, contributing to a bronze medal at the FIBA Asia Cup.
She has since played for Geelong United and Melbourne Tigers in NBL1 South and debuted in the WNBL with the UC Capitals in 2024/2025.
At The Geelong College (2002 to 2013), Horvat was a Calvert House member and excelled in athletics, nurturing the discipline and drive that fuel her success.
Horvat was inducted into the OGCA Notables Gallery in 2025.
