Fiona Leonard OAM (OGC 1988) is a distinguished writer, director, and arts advocate whose creative work spans continents and genres. With a career rooted in storytelling and cultural exploration, she has written and directed numerous theatrical productions across Australia, Ghana, Germany, the US and the UK. Through her company Blue Goat Theatre, founded in 2018, Leonard has brought fourteen original theatre productions to life, blending sharp narrative with global themes. She also writes for screen and television, and recently optioned her first feature film, showcasing her ability to craft compelling work for diverse audiences.
Leonard is also a published author, with works including the Ketcher Assassin Series for the online publication Rogue Matter and the novel The Chicken Thief, which reflect her unique voice and global perspective. Her artistic journey has been enriched by residencies in Paris, Morocco, Greece and Canada, allowing her to immerse herself in varied cultural landscapes and deepen her creative practice.
Before her full-time commitment to the arts, Leonard served in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, a role that shaped her understanding of international relations and humanitarian service. In 2003, she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her exceptional service in assisting victims and families following the 2002 Bali bombings - a testament to her compassion and leadership in times of crisis.
Leonard’s formative years at The Geelong College (1985 to 1988) were marked by academic excellence and broad co-curricular involvement. A Coles House Prefect, she earned School Colours in athletics and multiple House Colours across debating, music, hockey, and more. She was a standout in hockey and athletics, winning the U16 Athletics Championship in 1986. Her achievements in debating and politics foreshadowed a career defined by eloquence, empathy, and global engagement - qualities that continue to shape her legacy in the arts and beyond.
