General Mathematics

Year 12 - Elective

Length of Course: Full Year
Department: Mathematics
Head of Department: Mr Dave Campbell
Year Available: 2025

General Mathematics Unit 3 and 4 focus on real-life application of mathematics and consists of the areas of study 'Data analysis, probability and statistics' and 'Discrete mathematics'. In undertaking these units, students are expected to be able to apply techniques, routines and processes involving arithmetic, lists, tables, and diagrams. Along with algebraic manipulation of equations and graphs, with the use of technology. The use of numerical, graphical, symbolic, financial and statistical functionality of technology (CAS calculator) will be emphasised.

Curriculum focus

Assumed knowledge and skills for General Mathematics Units 3 and 4 are contained in General Mathematics Unit 1 and 2, and will be drawn on, as applicable, in the development of related content from areas of study, and key knowledge and skills for the outcomes of Units 3 and 4.

Unit 3 comprises of the topics

  • Data analysis

  • Recursion and financial modelling

Unit 4 comprises of the topics

  • Matrices

  • Networks and decision mathematics

Assessment

The award of satisfactory completion is based on whether the student has demonstrated the set of outcomes specified. Teachers use a variety of learning activities and assessment tasks to provide a range of opportunities for students to demonstrate these.

  • Outcome 1: define and explain key concepts as specified in the content from the areas of study and apply a range of related mathematical routines and procedures.

  • Outcome 2: apply mathematical processes in non- routine contexts including situations with some open-ended aspects requiring investigative, modelling or problem solving techniques or approaches, and analyse and discuss these application of mathematics.

  • Outcome 3: apply computational thinking and use numerical, graphical, symbolic and statistical functionalities of technology to develop mathematical ideas, produce results and carry out analysis in situations requiring investigative, modelling or problem-solving techniques or approaches.

The award of grades and scores for the course is based on three components, school-assessed coursework and two external examinations.

School-assessed coursework contributes to 40% of the study score.

  • Unit 3: Data Analysis Application Task based (16% of study score) and a Recursion and Financial Modelling Problem-solving Task (8% of study score).

  • Unit 4: Matrices Problem-solving Task (8% of study score) and a Networks Problem-solving Task (8% of study score).

External examinations contribute to 60% of the study score

  • Examination 1: This examination comprises multiple-choice questions to assess students’ knowledge of both areas of study. The examination will be of one and a half hours duration and students may use an approved CAS calculator, a scientific calculator and one bound reference which may be brought into the examination. (30% of study score)

  • Examination 2: This examination comprises written response questions to solve extended application problems in a range of contexts covering both areas of study. The examination will be of one and a half hours duration and students may use an approved CAS calculator, a scientific calculator and one bound reference which may be brought into the examination. (30% of study score)
