Charles Baird was born 8 May 1932 to C A Keith and Elizabeth Baird (nee Outtrim). Charles was a day student at the College from 1937 t 1951. Keith was head of the wool department at the Geelong branch of Dalgety and Co. and a head wool auctioneer.

A member of Morrison House, Charles was House Prefect for the Day Boys in his final year of school. With the encouragement of his father who was a keen supporter of the school’s rowing endeavours, Charles was in the 1st VIII in 1950 and 1951. He was Captain of Boats in 1951 and received a number of honours for rowing during his time at school. Rowing became a lifelong love for Charles which included a successful 12 year stint as rowing coach at Gippsland Grammar.

In his first year of the school, the ‘Pegasus’ reported that Charles and friend Graham Stephinson were jackarooing on ‘Stoneleigh’ Estate near Beaufort. Charles would go on to work on a number of properties, establishing a sheep farming property in Gippsland with wife Sally (MOC 1949). The couple have three daughters.

Charles passed away 8 April 2021, aged 88 years.

Charles' brother Malcolm also attended College.
