'Sam' Bickford, 1962 (Miles Album)
BICKFORD, Cyril Alfred (1907-1990) Known as ‘Sam’, C A Bickford was an English and Latin Teacher at the College from 1946 to 1971 and was the Senior English Teacher for the latter period of his service. Like most teachers he had varied responsibilities during his period with the School and is noted as the coach of the Under 15 football team in 1958, Head of Warrinn in 1961, Sports Secretary and organizer of the House Sports in 1963, and the teacher-in-charge of 3rd Forms in 1967. For a time he was the School’s APS delegate for Public School Sports. He was also responsible for
'Chez Nous' during its brief life time and was editor of the school Magazine,
Pegasus.
His contribution in seeing the Matriculation English Literature numbers double under his leadership is recognised by the naming of the
C A Bickford Prize for the top Year 12 English student in his honour. Ad Astra described him as being
‘well remembered for his keen sense of humour and his enthusiastic football and cricket coaching’ . He lived his retirement in his home state of Tasmania until his death on 26 March, 1990.
