BIRNIE, John Irving (1896-1954)


Born on 13 December 1896, John Irving Birnie was enrolled at Geelong College in 1905 by N. Birnie.

The following obituary appeared in the School magazine, Pegasus in June 1954.
John Irvine (sic) Birnie had an outstanding sporting and scholastic record at the College from 1905 to 1915. He was a member of the XI for six years (1910-1915), and was captain for four years (1912-1915). For five years (1911-1915), he was in the XVIII, of which he was captain (1915) in his last year at the School. He was also a Prefect (1912-1915), and a member of the Athletic Team for four years (1908-1911); and in his last year, was Senior Prefect (1915). After he left College, he joined Dennys Lascelles, and was for five years a member of the Committee of the Old Collegians' Association. He died on Sunday, May 2 (1954).

John Birnie's brothers, George Alexander Birnie (1889-1979); Robert Kenneth Birnie (1890-1956); and Norman Eric Stewart Birnie (1892-1920); were also day students at the Geelong College.
